Recently, I went through the process of conducting studies to prepare for a website redesign. A few short weeks ago, I set out on the process of recommending redesigns for The Edge Fitness Clubs’ website (https://www.theedgefitnessclubs.com/). As it is, the site has a reasonably unpleasant user experience. The interface of the site commonly gets in the way of locating information. Much of the information on the site is hidden, and if not, the navigation is difficult to use. The navigation includes several inconsistent and confusing drop-downs that users have to figure out prior to locating the information they are looking for.
To develop a plan for redesigning the site I developed three personas and scenarios and conducted a comparative analysis, user interview, user survey, closed card sort, and usability report. I also developed the process for a five-second test and a sentence completion test.
By conducting this research, it was found that users did struggle to locate information, and even expected it to be organized in a different fashion. This proved my assumption that the navigation and location of information were confusing for users. Through the use of personas and their scenarios, it was found that the site does not cater to very many of its users’ needs. The scenarios proved that the users’ needs were not met and most were likely to leave the website frustrated.
For a redesign, it was suggested to reorganize the navigation to simplify the location of desired information. It was also recommended that commonly desired information be highlighted a bit more so users would be able to locate it easier. A full report was developed so the results of the research as well as the recommendations for the redesign could be easily located in an individual document.
