HealthReach is a non-profit organization whose mission is “To provide high quality, affordable, patient-centered healthcare in the medically underserved communities of Central and Western Maine.”
HealthReach has established strong patient-clinician relationships for almost 48 years. What once was one community health center, and 7 patients has now grown to be 11 community health center locations, and 25,000+ patients. Although HealthReach continues to grow and advance, its website has failed to keep up. The current design of the website provides a poor user interface through color, typography, and iconography as well as a poor user experience, with several pain points, poor navigation, and non-existent responsive design.
This is a problem that was meant to be solved. Recently, my partner Sam Bloch and I worked together to develop a content strategy report for HealthReach, identifying areas of success, areas in need of improvement, and recommendations to do so. For this project, I focused my efforts on site architecture, competitive analysis, client needs, content design, writing style guidelines, and KPIs to determine success. This was exciting for me to utilize my knowledge of user experience in a different setting. Sam and I worked together to develop a formal document to present our findings within the report.
Sam and I worked alongside one another to compile research findings and develop strong recommendations for the HealthReach website. I learned a lot about the market that HealthReach exists within as well as its competitors through a competitive analysis. Through this comprehensive analysis, I focused mainly on what was similar between the organizations, as well as what was being done well and poorly by competitors. Comparing the user interface and the user experience of the websites provides opportunities to develop a competitive edge by excelling in areas where competitors lack. If HealthReach were to implement these recommendations, it would take its site from old and outdated, to modern and competitive, and bring in new site visitors and prospective patients as a result.
There was a lot to learn throughout this project. My skills were challenged in ways that they typically aren’t, I had to research and think about things from a different perspective, and also deliver my findings to my partner, Sam, in the process. Working with Sam was great, each of our individual skill sets balanced the other perfectly, and a professional, comprehensive report was the result.
